Josef Schützenhöfer was born in Vorau (Austria) in 1954. He emigrated to the United States and joined the United States Navy medical discharge. In 1985 he graduated from the Maryland Institute with an MFA in Painting (Grace Hartigan) and assumed the position of freelance artist. He was awarded, amongst others, the NEA Award for Painting (1996) and the Förderungspreis des Landes Steiermark für zeitgenössische bildende Kunst (2008). In 1997 Schützenhöfer relocated to the EU, now residing on the river while thinking of the sea. In his recent work he targets the issue of historical rehabilitation. At steirischer herbst 2012 he will participate in the 24/7 marathon camp “Truth is concrete”.
